RAND’s Countering Russian Social media Influence
A recent report from the RAND Corporation was written by Elizabeth Bodine-Baron, Todd C. Helmus, Andrew Radin, and Elina Treyger.
This report analyzes different approaches and policy options to respond to the specific threat of Russian influence on social media in the U.S. To do this, they surveyed relevant literature to understand what solutions have already been proposed through academic articles, think tank reports, the news media, legal journals, or other sources. Then, they developed a broad framework—a disinformation chain—to analyze the threat posed by Russian disinformation operations on social media and an initial set of solutions. RAND convened a workshop to discuss approaches to address each link of the Russian disinformation chain.
