Event: March 22 Virtual Speakers to Present Research on Russian Disinformation in Former Soviet States

The U.S. Technology Leadership Council (USTLC) will host a virtual forum on March 22, 2022 highlighting research from the University of Tennessee at Knoxville on “Russian Propaganda/Disinformation in Select Former Soviet States: Belarus Presidential Election and Ensuing Protests in 2020.”

Dr. Natalie Rice and Dr. Oleg Manaev of the University of Tennessee at Knoxville will present their research funded through the U.S. Department of Defense Minerva Research Initiative, the Pentagon’s signature social science basic research grant program. Dr. Rice is a Research Associate in the Center for Information and Communication Studies at The University of Tennessee Knoxville and is co-principal investigator on the Minerva grant. Her research areas include the use of digital and social media disinformation, propaganda, and other information warfare techniques used by state actors targeting the U.S. and foreign audiences, as well as Russian influence campaigns and the resulting impacts on global security. Dr. Manaev, also a Research Associate at the University of Tennessee and co-PI on the Minerva grant, received his Ph.D. in Sociology from The Belarusian State University with a focus on media and political process. His research areas include media effectiveness, public opinion and democracy, propaganda and Russian information warfare. For 25 years he led the Independent Institute of Socio-Economic and Political Studies (IISEPS) until it was terminated by the Belarusian KGB (https://www.manaevoleg.org/).
